US Common Core Math Tutoring (Grades 3-8)

Math feels easy and fun when students learn to think instead of being told what to do to get to the answer. My Common Core aligned lessons help children in Grades 3-8 build strong reasoning, problem-solving, and confidence by discovering answers through guided questioning. Whether your child needs to catch up, keep pace, or move ahead, each session adapts to their current level and learning style.

My Teaching Approach

When students get stuck, I don’t jump in with the answer. Instead, I ask guiding questions that lead them to uncover the reasoning themselves. This approach builds real understanding, not memorization. Over time, students start asking those same questions on their own — turning confusion into curiosity and hesitation into confidence. You can check my approach out in live action here.

Grade-wise Focus (Grades 3–8)

Each grade builds on the last, strengthening number sense, reasoning, and fluency. My lessons follow the Common Core progression while making every topic approachable and connected to real understanding.

Grade 3: Mastery of multiplication and division, understanding fractions as parts of a whole, and introduction to area and perimeter.

Grade 4: Multi-digit multiplication and division, equivalent fractions, and using the four operations to solve word problems.

Grade 5: Operations with decimals and fractions, volume, and introduction to coordinate planes.

Grade 6: Ratios, percentages, and algebraic thinking — translating words into expressions and equations.

Grade 7: Linear equations, proportional relationships, and applications of geometry and probability.

Grade 8: Systems of equations, functions, and preparation for high school algebra.

Each student moves through these ideas at a pace that balances comfort with challenge, ensuring no gaps before advancing.

How Lessons Work

Each session happens live on Zoom using an interactive whiteboard, where students solve problems step by step while I guide them with targeted questions. We revisit tricky concepts until every step makes sense — no rushing ahead. Between sessions, motivated students get short review tasks or practice sheets to strengthen retention. Some students bring their own problems to work on. For the rest, I prefer IXL or Khan Academy.

Parents receive periodic updates so they can clearly see progress, topic coverage, and growing confidence in problem-solving.

Parent FAQs

Q: How are classes scheduled?
A: Each student has a fixed weekly timeslot — for example, Tuesdays 7 PM – 8 PM — reserved just for them every week.

Q: Do you offer group lessons?
A: Yes, small-group sessions are available if a student brings along some friends at a similar level. I don’t form groups myself.

Q: What tools do you use for online tutoring?
A: All sessions are conducted live on Zoom using an interactive whiteboard for real-time problem-solving.

Q: Are lessons recorded?
A: Yes, sessions are recorded so students can revisit them later for review or clarification.

Q: Do you give homework?
A: I don’t assign formal homework. For motivated learners, I guide how to use their independent practice time effectively between lessons.
